A very special Court of Honor PDF Print E-mail

On May 11th 2009, Troop 994 gathered as has been customary to recognize the achievements of our scouts. The troop recognized and awarded the first rank of scouting to their newest members of the troop. Several boys advanced rank between Tenderfoot to Life scout.

They also awarded approxiately 60 Merit badges to scouts.

But this was a special Court of Honor and everybody knew it. You see over the years the troop has always left the last candle of our ceremony unlit. This last candle signifies the final rank of Eagle Scout. It is typically held during a special Eagle Court of Honor ceremony where recipient  is the highlight and his closest friends and advisors help recall that particular scouts path to Eagle.

On this night however, things were going to be different because of one very unique young man.

Micheal Poulos joined scouting as a youth and at the age of 17 he finally earned his Eagle Rank becoming the 40th Eagle that Troop 994 has produced. Micheal's story is a special story one that is filled with challenges and many highs and lows. Through it all he has been very steady in his processes and though many of the leaders wondered if he would ever make Eagle, we all saw a quality in this young man that was unique.

I first met Micheal when my own son crossed into the troop he was only 15 at the time but he possessed a high degree of knowledge in scout skills, particularly survival tatics and hunting skills. He knew so much about knives and the art of fire making that I had to be cautious of giving someone who was so knowledgable advice.

Over the years, I saw in him something else. His compassion and deep desire to teach other kids the passion he possessed never failed. While other scouts grew up and sometimes forgot to come back and teach the younger children. Micheal was forever embedded into the troop's folk lore. It wasn't because he did something spectacular or supremely imaginative. Stories of Micheal are told by our young scouts because he came back many times to teach what he was so passionate about. In the eyes of the younger scouts Micheal has left an indelable mark one that will last for many their entire lives. He accomplished what many adult scout leaders hope to do, To make a difference in the life of a young man.

When Micheal was asked how he would like to have his ceremony held. he replied, "You know the scouts never get to see an Eagle Court of Honor till much later. I'd like to have my court of honor at the troops court of honor so that the scouts can see what the final goal looks like."

So, on this warm May evening the troop gathered and gave a loud standing ovation to our 40th Eagle Scout Micheal Poulos. Congradulations on becoming and Eagle and more importantly showing us what a true eagle scouts heart is.

Photo's of the entire event are now viewable in the troops photo gallery. You must have an account on our website to view the link to the Photo Gallery.
