The Not So Lazy Days of Summer PDF Print E-mail

Summer is upon us and this years finds our troop and crew doing a great many things.

Camp Sydney Dew

The Troop has just completed it's annual Summer Camp at Camp Sydney Dew. All the boys survived and our spikebuck new scouts completed a vast amount of skills for their early rank advancements.

Photo's from the event are just now going online in our Gallery. Please remember that you must be registered on the web site to view these photo's.

Philmont

Our patrol of boys have just returned also from New Mexico's Philmont Scout Reservation. This is the Boy Scout Most Extreme and demanding but most rewarding camping experience. We hope to hear how the trip went from them and have photo's and stories of the trip soon.

The Troops next slotted trip to Philmont is currently set to summer of 2009. Who will be up for the challenge then?

Northern Tier

This weekend another patrol of boys will be departing for the call of the great north and travelling to Canada and the Northern Tier Adventure. There they will spend a week traveling the wilderness by rivers and streams via canoes and hiking a la Louis and Clark.

Ocoee and Nanatahala White Water Trips

After TAPS (Troop Annual Planning Session) the boys will have the opportunity to float down the not so lazy rivers of the Ocohee and Nanatahala Rapids of North Carolina. The Ocohee is for the older more experienced scouts and you must have done the Nanatahala a few times before trying this river. Both the Troop and the Crew have scheduled slots for this trip for this fall.

The Nanatahala is a calmer but still brisk white water rapid experience. A class 2 rapid for most of the trip but culminating in a Class 3 cresendo at the end of the voyage. Younger scouts are encouraged to try their hand at this experience and it is required before doing the Ocohee.

Look for more details on these trips soon.

Sumer Physical Fitness

Mr. Garlinghouse is organizing a sumer physical fitness class. He is capable of handling 10 boys for these sessions and will encompass all the requirements for the Physical Fitness Merit Badge. He will be running this class to help boys get into shape for some of this falls activities. Please talk to him about enrolling. I think his entrance fee is a "Sugar Coated Donut" Laughing

Troop 994 and Crew 994 joined forces this past weekend to prepare for the call of the Northern Wild, Atikokan

Atikokan is one of the premire scouting high adventures that become available to scouts after they turn 14 years old. It is a week long trek into the rivers and forests of Canada and Minnesota.

The boys and gals got first hand training on the local mode of transportation up there.

For many of the boys this will be their first trip there. I am sure by the smiles on their faces they can't wait.  Have a great trip guys and we hope to have more photo's of the trip when you get back.

Photo's of the weekend training can be found in our troop albums
